What Seventh-day Adventists Believe Fundamental Beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church
Seventh-day Adventists accept the Bible as their only creed and hold certain fundamental beliefs to be the teaching of the Holy Scriptures. These beliefs, as set forth here, constitute the church's understanding and expression of the teaching of Scripture. More >> Our History It was in July, 1975, that Pastor H.C. Brewer, Evangelist and then Pastor of the Linden Boulevard SDA Church, erected a tent on the vacant lot situated at Linden Boulevard between 198th and 199th Street. Here a dynamic evangelistic effort ensued for the duration of several weeks. The nightly meetings were well attended. Soon after the meetings started we encountered a frustrating situation. The tent canvas began to disintegrate in several places at the same time during a wind and rain storm. With God's help and the loyalty of the faithful hardworking brethren, the situation was quickly rectified. The good work of Pastor Brewer went on and at its conclusion, many souls accepted Christ and followed Him by baptism. It was these souls, along with a few members from the Mother Church, Linden that started the membership of the Mt. SinaI SDA Church. In spite of transfers to various branches of our sister churches, most continued to be faithful members of our congregation. Since the tent effort was that of the Linden Boulevard Church, it was fitly named Linden Mission. A lack of space to accommodate the new group of believers became a problem. A Baptist church in the St. Albans community, to whom we will always be grateful permitted our small congregation to worship in their church home. We were working and praying earnestly for our own church but the membership were financially strapped. After worshiping at North Eastern Conference building under then President pastor George Earl and with the relocation of Pastor Brewer, new leadership was needed. God sent us Pastor Doctor Smith, from 1975 to 1980. He was a man full of the Holy Ghost. As a result of Pastor Smith's friendship with the distinguished Pastor John Agard, he donated the church building at 171st and 140th Ave. Doc Smith organized the members into the church body known as the Mt. Sinai SDA Church. God continued to bless our membership growth under Pastor White who spent approximately nine months at Mt. Sinai. Pastor Willard Hall followed Pastor White from 1981 to 1988, and church growth continued until the need for yet a larger building was eminent. Once again we sacrificed and pledged our offerings for a different church home. In our quest to expand the membership and taking God at His word, Pastor Hall and the members embarked upon a new campaign to seek a place large enough to house the members. In Scripture we find God challenging His people to put Him to the test as far as the worthiness of His promises. In Malachi 3:10, He say's to us "Prove me now herewith if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour you out blessings there will not be room to receive it." Taking Him at His word, Pastor Hall and supporting-members moved forward by faith and sacrificial giving only to find that God's promises are faithful and true. He came through by providing our present location. We praise His Holy Name. Pastor Hall served God and the members of Mt. Sinai for seven years. God called him to serve in another area of his vineyard and sent Pastor Winston Stephenson who served four years. He was followed by Pastor Roy Hoyte, who served for two years and Pastor Ernie Wright who served for three years. These men of God accepted the challenge to continue to lead the members. They worked to unite the Church and community in a band of love, service and fellowship. Pastor Stephenson and Pastor Wright continued in the tradition of Pastor Brewer by conducting dynamic evangelistic crusades, winning over 400 souls combined for Christ. Pastor Hoyte, a man of God and immeasurable faith inspired the members to pay off our Conference loan. Pastor James LaMar began his ministry here on November 1, 1997. He accepted the challenge to continue to lead this congregation which was founded more than 25 years ago in Queens. As a result of his leadership in a renovation program we are worshiping God in our newly decorated edifice. Here is an open invitation to come and visit with us. We are looking for you and if you are looking for a church home you've just found one. The Lord can use you in service for Him. To the members who made this faith effort a reality, we say, "Thank you" and "To God be the glory, great things He has done." Without a doubt we believe "With God all things are possible." I pray that this answer to prayer will be a continuous reminder to each member and supporting friend that this God who led us this far will continue to lead us when we are faced with even greater challenges, in ways that will allow us not to follow cunningly devised fables.
